New to mac in general trying to do the simplest of things. Which is print a business card Have the paper (avery - clean edge yada yada) Have been here HOURS I am sure I can do some sort of custon layout etc to match the format of the paper i am using but there must be a simpler way??? Have apple works and I works. Am I going to have to get Word for Mac? OH and the Mac templates for Biz cards s- Used the assistant to do a biz card template - awful and totally inflexible why is everything seemingly so difficult???????????

Ibook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.5) iworks appleworks. What makes the Appleworks business card assistant interesting is that you are really creating a database. Once you select the correct Avery template you can vary the layout to the nth degree, add graphics, change information on the card, etc. You only have to change the info and layout on one record and it changes on all the business cards on the page. Pages has nothing like this.

Appleworks: To create a new document using an Assistant: 1 If Starting Points isn't open, choose Show Starting Points from the File menu. 2 Click the Assistants tab. 3 Click an Assistant.

(Click on the business card assistant) 4 Follow the instructions provided by the Assistant. After creating your business card 'database' click on the layout menu (top of the screen) and then select 'layout' in the top options. This will take you to the layout screen where you can add graphics, adjust the fonts you are using, etc. Follow the instructions that are in the layout window. Business cards can be customized easily from the layout view and best of all, any change you make here applies to all cards on the page.

I don't think Pages has any sort of a capability to do this; I've certainly not seen cards or labels or such mentioned anywhere in the manual or the Help sections. Bit of a shame, now that I think about it — would be great to use the layout capabilities for cards and labels and such. AppleWorks is capable, of course. Are those the 'Mac templates' that you're referring to, by the way? I'm not aware of any others, and was just curious.

It's been a while since I've done up new ones, but as far as I can recall I wound up doing them in AW — but in the Label setup, not the Cards one. You can talk Avery in there or, at your option or depending on your need, it's pretty simple and straightforward to do a custom setup as I think I did (wanted some special formatting, I think). Anyway, take a look at that. Ask any questions about it in the AW forum vice here; they have a bunch of folks there who are answering questions about this sort of thing all the time. Yep those were the mac templates i was referring to. Didn't check out the others but wow. On the bus cards not much choice and no creativity either.

Anyway yes have apple works and will follow your suggestions i had found the number for the avery product i was looking for in the labels section but have not been successful in getting info in with varying font and margins etc as i need spent at least another hour on it and no closer to having a product. Don't know how to draw a document so will need to learn that again will follow your suggestion about looking for help but is feeling like i am needing that with each little thing i try to do which ends up endless empty hours anyway thahnks.
